After my Navy career I started a second career as a Corporate Pilot (I had earned an Airline Transport Certificate and all Flight Instructors certificates while in the Navy). I flew as a line captain for a large paper company for about one year, went on to another smaller company as chief pilot and in 1977 was hired by GEICO DIRECT to start their Flight department. I flew a King Air 200 for the first seven years and then a Learjet 35 until I was forced out of the cockpit in 1992 due to a medical problem. I remained at GEICO as Director of Transportation until July of 1996. The Flight Department, all airline/hotel/rental cars and the companies fleet of 1500 vehicles were my responsibility.
In July 1996, the company let me split out the fleet of vehicles and approved the management of that function from home. I recently retired from GEICO (3/31/01) and enjoy life here on the NC coast playing golf and working in the yard among other things.
