AWCS (Ret.) Dave "Devo" DeVarney I can't really call Ray a sea daddy since I never worked directly for him but I did work with him at FASO Det Moffett so I guess that makes him a "Sea Uncle". I learned a couple of things from Ray...but it was the result of his example. When I knew him, he was assigned as the Shop Chief for the Print Shop. I asked myself why in the heck would an AW want to do that job. It was later in life I received my answer. It was not because he was an AW...it was because he was a Chief! He knew how to lead and how to manage and I have to admit he certainly had a happy shop. Ray was a hands on type of guy....he loved working the printing presses and after a day of ink all over his hands one could say he didn't mind getting dirty. The bottom line was he got the job done with a minimum workforce to accomplish the mission.
Ray was also instrumental during my transition to sobriety as well. He, as well as others, provided the words of encouragement I needed to get my act together. Thanks Ray for all you did for me!
AWCM (Ret.) Dave Paden Ray was a VP type AWCS and was one of the originals. Nice guy..good instructor. I never flew with him but I did part of a tour in FAETUPAC at North Island where Ray was a TACCO instructor on the ASA 16 course.
AWCM (Ret.) Bill Hernandez Ray Jensen and I were in VP-40 together during the early 80's. He was a very jovial guy in the Chief's mess and well liked there. Sorry to lose him, but I know he is in good company with some great AW's up there.
AWCM (Ret.) Michael C. Hobbs Like Dave Paden, my memories of Ray are from FAETUPAC where we shared the platform, teaching tactics and ASA-16 to first and second tour TACCO's and TACNAV's. I remember Ray as a really likeable guy, a darn good instructor, and a welcome shipmate; one of the faces I immediately remember and associate with those years at North Island. Fair winds old friend.
AWCM (Ret.) Sam Hindman Ray was one of my acoustic instructors when I went through FAETUPAC Moffett. He and Shark and several others of us used to finish class and adjourn to the club. He was a good man!
AW1 (Civ.) John Magraw Ray was a dear friend and P5M-2 shipmate. I met Ray in the early 60's in VP31. We went thru the RAG together and served in VP48 together. My wife and I have remained friends with Ray and Helen. He will be missed. Godspeed my friend.
