STGCM (Ret.) Dennis Avery: I
worked for Chief Babins in the early 70s in VX-1. He is the only person I
now that actually detected and localized a snorkeling FOXTROT using
"SNIFFER". SNIFFER was a sensor on the P-2 that detected exhaust
particulates in the air. The indicator was one of the pens on the MAD
recorder. The way it was supposed to work was if a detection was made, the
aircraft would head across wind until detection was lost, then turn upwind
for a while, then back across wind until detection was made again. The
duration of the detection indicated distance to the target. The longer the
detection, the further away the target was. One big problem, you didn't
know what the target was until you localized it. Stu was the SNIFFER King.
