Plane was lost at sea off the coast of Sicily flying from the USS Nimitz. Aircraft was doing a fly-by. Only Charlie's body was recovered. A memorial service was held onboard the Nimitz on November 19, 1981. AW1 C. L. McGill delivered the eulogy. AW3 Charles Michael Wade was a native of Chicago, Illinois. He graduated from Clinton High School, Clinton, Mississippi in June 1979. He enlisted in the Navy in March 1979 on a delayed entry program and reported for duty to the Naval Training Center, Orlando, Florida in October 1979 and graduated from recruit training in December 1979, with orders to Aviation Antisubmarine Warfare Operator Training, Millington, Tennessee.
After completion of Aviation Antisubmarine Warfare Operator "A" School at Naval Air Station Memphis, AW3 Wade reported to VS-41, Naval Air Station North Island, San Diego, California for S-3A Sensor Operator Training. AW3 Wade reported to VS-24 in February 1981 and was awarded his Aircrew Wings in June 1981.
AW3 Wade is survived by his parents Mr. and Mrs. Samuel J. Wade, his brother James, and his sisters Sandra and Amy, all of Clinton, Mississippi.
