Helicopters and ships searched the Atlantic 300 miles west of Portugal yesterday for signs of four airmen who were lost when their twin-engine plane crashed shortly after taking off from the aircraft carrier Wasp.
A Navy spokesman at Quonset Point Naval Air Station, where the Wasp is based, said last night the search was continuing.
The families of three of the missing live in the Quonset area.
The Navy said the S-2E Tracker plane crashed after it was launched on a "routine training mission" under adverse weather conditions.
Other ships joined helicopters from the Wasp in the search for the airmen, the Navy said.
The men are assigned to Air Antisubmarine Squadron 22 aboard the Wasp, which left Quonset April 1. The were engaged in antisubmarine tracking maneuvers when the accident occurred.
